is mono focused right now on the fiscal cliff. they have put off all cabinet announceme announcements, maybe for a ravay of reasons, but they have made sure nothing is brought up except the fiscal cliff right now. that's part of the reason they're prioritizing only that. that said on gun control, he's getting emotional about this. you can say whatever you want to criticize president obama. he is not a man who gets emotional easily in public. and i do think that this is something that has hit him deeply, probably out of guilt, because he didn't do much about it or anything about it in his first term. will he make it a political requirety, will he be able to pursue it aggressively given the obstacles in his way, we'll see. >> but the one thing -- >> when we covered -- when the white house would come up with a bill and say here, capitol hill, we would like you to pass this. >> the one thing has always been clear on the gun control debate is that time is not the friend of gun control advocates. unlike everybody else, the nra has a is ingu lar focus and a -- singular focus and long memory

, the lack of volume. because of the fiscal cliff, huge amounts of oil money on the side lines right now. take a look at volumes. we ran these numbers and put this together, february of 2011 it was a good month for oil, trading the average day, 934,000 contracts traded. by last month, november of this year, that was almost cut in half to almost -- well, a little bit more than half a million a day. yesterday the volume? 175,000 contracts. and today our producer just gave me the numbers, just totalled up all. 261,000 contracts today. that's still half the typical volume for december. this money is on the side lines because even though you can make a lot of money in oil, nobody wants to be hanging out there right now with the danger of the fiscal cliff overhanging everything. it's -- it's not a good time if you have got money and you want to do something with it. ashley: that's right. >> it's on the side lines. ashley: you are right. jeff in the cold. thank you jeff. thank you very much. did you end up with coal in your stocking this year? we had to use that line. coal stocks have taaen a t

right. well who needs washington? starbucks actually has a plan to brew a fiscal cliff deal. now in a letter to starbucks employees ceo howard schultz asked employees at its d.c. area store to write, come together, on coffee cups when serving customers thursday and friday. rather than be bystanders you and your customers have the opportunity and i believe we all have a responsibility to send our elected officials a respectful but pointed message, urging them to come together to find common ground. this is not the first time starbucks has taken a political stand. during the debt ceiling debate in august 2011, schultz made a splash calling for boycott of political contributions it u.s. lawmakers until they struck a bipartisan deal. starbucks shares at this point down slightly, 48 cents. imagine john boehner going into starbucks and they write on the cup, come together. hello. lori: boehner, this is directly to you. tracy: exactly. howard schultz is on the campaign to fix the debt. he is one of the ceos that has come out. lori: he has nothing to lose being advocate, being outspoken.

both sides have decided it's in their political interest to go over the fiscal cliff. is that right? >> yeah, you never want to rule a deal off the table because we have lived through so many rounds that have ended in deals in the last couple years, but in this case, i think democrats think they get a better deal on policy by going over the cliff. that they end up getting more in taxes with less in spending cuts than they would get if they had to cut a deal right now. and republicans have persuaded themselves not completely convincingly in my view, but they have persuaded themselves it's much better to accept slightly higher taxes that they themselves don't have to vote for directly, even though they'll still be casting a vote for new tax rates, they'll be able to say, well, taxes have already gone up and we're just voting to cut them. so that's sort of how, at least, i think both sides are persuading themselves to sort of tip-toe off the cliff. >> and charles, i know you think republicans have more to lose here, but does either side get a boost from this? >> i don't think you get a

average. there are fears that we're heading over the fiscal cliff. the markets had weak data. consumer confidence for the month of november which, again, reflected concerns that we were headed over the fiscal cliff. the dow, nasdaq and s&p all negative for the month right now. as we take a look at the dow jones industrial average, the drags are cisco system, bank of america. the best performing stock on the dow for this year following its very poor performance in the prior year, alcoa also weaker along with jpmorgan and h hewlett-packa hewlett-packard. 50 day average, when it breaks below that on decent volume, the down side the traders are watching the levels as we came into today's session. groups that are leading the s&p lower are financials which are the best performing sector of 2012. taking a turn south in today's session. energy and materials actually also joining the fray among the leading laggers within the sectors that we followed. we also wanted to point out jcpenney. it was an outlier and today it reverses. it's having its worst day in six weeks, i believe. the reason being

the fiscal cliff. now to jackie and future now. >> that's right. you can see it on the chart. gold was lower this morning until majority leader harry reid took to the senate floor and says it looks likely we will go off the fiscal cliff. if we do go off, is buying gold your best bet? even with the cliff looming, gold has done badly over the past month. does that surprise you? >> it does. when you look at money printing going on in japan and the fiscal cliff here and debt ceiling limit and relatively weak dollar, gold should have a lot more shine to it. >> not like the possibility of going over the cliff is something new. if gold is getting a bit on cliff fears, why has it sold off in the last month? what's taken so long? >> funny you mention that, they read the headline, harry reid says, looks like we're going over the cliff, i don't think anybody thinks about that. but everybody hits the sell button because they think everybody's going to. there's plenty of reason to buy gold but whatever gold is dealing with on the negative side it is not done dealing with. i don't think it's a good time.
